Cable Box User's Guide

(UI Campus Video System Version)

University of Iowa residence halls and family housing are served by the University of Iowa Campus Video System (CVS), a coaxial cable television distribution system. The system uses addressable cable boxes controlled by a centrally located system manager. The system manager authorizes the reception of entertainment channels for which there is a charge to residents.

Requests for CVS pay entertainment services must be made in person at 23 Lindquist Center or other locations designated by CVS during University registration periods. Cable boxes are distributed to residents upon payment of required fees.

For additional information, please call 335-5898 or send email to: cabletv@uiowa.edu.

IMPORTANT
RULES FOR SAFE OPERATIONS FOR THE CVS CABLE BOX

For your safety, please read all safety and operating instructions before installing and operating your cable box.   These safety instructions and the operations should be followed and retained for future reference. Please head all warnings and cautions in the instructions and on the cable box.

1. This cable box should be operated only from a 120V outlet. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire or electrical shock.

2. The cable box is equipped with a polarized plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plus will fit into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

3. Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by times placed upon or against them. Pay particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the cable box.

4. The cable box should be located on a stable-mounting surface capable of supporting its size and weight. To avoid personal injury or serious damage to the cable box, place it where the cord will not be tripped over and the cable box is not likely to be bumped.

5. Slots and opening on the cable box are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the cable box. To prevent over heating, these opening must not be blocked or covered. The opening should never be blocked by placing the cable box on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. The cable box should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided.

6. Never push objects of any kind into the cable box through opening which may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the cable box.

7. Do not use the cable box near water or expose the cable box to rain.

8. Before cleaning, unplug the cable box from the wall outlet. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.

9. For added protection of the cable box against lightning damage during a storm, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the cable system input wire. Also, do this if the cable box will be left unattended or unused for a long period of time. This will prevent possible damage to the cable box from lightning and power-line surges.

10. Do not attempt to service this cable box yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.

11. For damage requiring service - Unplug the cable box from the wall outlet and call CVS under the following conditions:

* When the power supply cord or plug is damaged. * If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the cable box. * If the cable box has been exposed to rain or water. * If the cable box has been dropped or the enclosure has been damaged. * If the cable box does not operate normally or exhibits a distinct change in performance, this may indicate a need for service. First, however, unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds and plug the cable box back into the outlet. Check the unit's performance. If the unit still exhibits poor performance, call CVS at 335-5898 or fill out our TROUBLE REPORT FORM.

INSTALLING THE CABLE BOX

1. Connect cable from outlet in room to INPUT connection on back of cable box.

2. Using cable provided by CVS, connect output connection on cable box to the 75-OHM CATV connection on TV set or VCR input connection. If your TV set does not have a 75 OHM CATV connection you will have to use a matching transformer to make a connection to the 300-OHM VHF antenna lugs on your set.

3. To turn your TV set on whenever the cable box is turned on, plug your TV set into the AC receptacle and leave TV off-on switch in the on position.  Note... Many newer TVs will revert their tuning to channel 2 when power is interrupted.  In those situations it is best to plug the TV directly into a normal AC outlet.  Then use normal means to turn the TV on and off.  The cable box may be left on without causing damage.

4. Plug cable box power cord into 120v outlet. The cable box is equipped with a polarized plug and will fit into the power outlet only one way.
